A Double Barrelled Detective Story Mark Twain 9781469929583 Books
"A Double-Barrelled Detective Story" was yet another ebook I found for free on Amazon's kindle shop. Mark Twain wrote it in 1902 (at least that's the publishing date; he may have written it earlier than that), and it even has its own wikipedia entry. At the start of the book, the reader meets a young couple very much in love in the year 1880. Things take a very bad turn, though, when not long after their wedding, the husband commits a terrible crime against his young wife. He flees the scene, and she is left to bring up their son on her own.
As the son grows up, he is trained by his mother for a special purpose: revenge.
Most of the story deals with how he goes about this task, and several chapters come in the shape of letters he writes to his mother while hot on the heels of his father.
The appearing of Sherlock Holmes on the scene marks the story's pinnacle; after that, it does not take long for everything to end in a rather satisfactory manner.
If you are looking for Mark Twain's usual humour in this short novel (approx. 180 pages in print), you could be disappointed; yes, the whole thing is a satire on the Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and there are some quite funny bits in it, but it is not quite what I expected.
That does not take away from it being an entertaining read, and I guess that is one of the few ebooks I keep on my kindle and do not delete after reading.

A Double Barrelled Detective Story Mark Twain 9781469929583 Books Reviews
Mark Twain doing a Sherlock Holmes story. Not his best work, but respectable. This Holmes is not exactly Doyle's Holmes.
Worth a look as it's in the public domain.
Mark Twain does not disappoint in this short story mystery, with a special guest appearance from none other than Sherlock Holmes! The story is easy enough to follow; the descriptions are lively; the prose is witty; and the story serves its readers well as a mystery. Can't say more without spoiling any surprise twists and turns!
I love sherlock Holmes and when I found out that Mark twain wrote a pastiche about him I knew I had to read it. I love how he over Exaggerated sherlock's detective skills and how the real perpetrator was found through supernatural means. It also helped that it was free.
This is Twain and so it's has historical and literary interest, but it's not Twain at his best. The book wanders around and the jokes are obscure. It's still fun to see Twain send up Sherlock Holmes, but not fun enough.
Sherlock Holmes visits the Old West and gets shown up by a local guy. It was Samuel Clemens poking fun at Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Good, not funny. Okay for a short read. Actually, the first part is kind of depressing. Last part, in a prospecting camp, fairly interesting.
As a fan of the mystery genre, I'm always glad when someone turns me on to something new. Here's a brilliant marketing scheme What if Mark Twain writes a Sherlock Holmes detective story? I can't say that it's a classic, but it is one highly entertaining book.
"We ought never to do wrong when people are looking." These are the very first words spoken in this clever and demented little story. Archy Stillman may have been born out-of-wedlock, but he was blessed with incredible olfactory senses -- like a bloodhound. When he's sixteen, Archie's mother convinces him to find his biological father and ruin his reputation, extracting a little payback. Five years later, the nephew of Sherlock Holmes kills someone by blowing up his cabin. Holmes uses all of his preposterous scientific methods to reach his brilliant conclusion, only to be disproved by Archy's amazing sense of smell.
This is Mark Twain having a little fun with the mystery genre. If you're a fan of either, I think you'll find this to be an enjoyable read.
